International: The New York Times Company Announces Plan to Rebrand the International Herald Tribune as the International New York Times

Company to Increase Investment in Editorial Resources for Multiplatform International Edition

The New York Times Company announced today (February 25, 2013) that it plans to rebrand the International Herald Tribune (IHT) and introduce a multiplatform international version of The New York Times that will be tailored and edited specifically for global audiences. The publication will be called the International New York Times and is planned to launch later this year.

We want to exploit that opportunity to attract international audiences, digital subscriptions and advertisers. We also believe that this is the right moment to rename the IHT as the International New York Times to create a single global media brand. Our goal is to capitalize on the great journalistic traditions of both newspapers, further invest in our international journalism and expand our global base while continuing to serve the many loyal readers of the IHT.”

“Making the full transition to a multiplatform International New York Times is a natural evolution after several years of aligning the two brands,” said Stephen Dunbar-Johnson, the publisher of the IHT. “The IHT has had three different nameplates in its 125-year history, with 'New York’ in its title for 80 of those years, but what has been consistent throughout has been the international sensibility. The good news for readers and advertisers is that with this rebrand we will be investing in enhancing that sensibility across print, Web and mobile platforms. Furthermore, we plan to add more voices in news and opinion to the existing network of columnists and reporters who give us our authoritative global perspective in everything from politics and business to fashion and the arts.”

The International New York Times, on all platforms, will be edited from Hong Kong, Paris, London and New York. More details of the initiative will be announced in the coming months.
